So, you’ve finally decided to swap the screen for a snorkel? Excellent choice. Diving in Melbourne isn’t just a hobby; it’s an entry into a world of weedy seadragons, historic shipwrecks, and a community of adventurers.
If you’re looking to learn to dive in Melbourne, you probably have a few questions. Is the water cold? How long does it take? Do I need to be an Olympic swimmer? At Simple Dive Melbourne, we believe the process should be, well, simple.
Here is exactly what to expect during your 3-day SDI Open Water course.
1. The Theory: No Boring Classrooms
Gone are the days of sitting in a dark room watching dusty VHS tapes. Our SDI Open Water course uses a digital-first approach.
-
eLearning: You complete your theory online at your own pace before you even step foot in our Blackburn shop.
-
Physics & Safety: You’ll learn the "why" behind the "how"—understanding how water pressure affects your body and how to plan your dives safely.
2. Day 1: Your First Breaths (Confined Water)
We start in a "confined water" environment (usually a pool). This is where the magic happens.
-
The Gear: We’ll fit you with high-quality brands like Apeks and Aqua Lung. You’ll learn how to set up your regulator, BCD, and cylinder.
-
The Skills: You’ll practice clearing your mask, recovering your regulator, and—most importantly—mastering your buoyancy.
-
Simple Dive Tip: Unlike some older programs, SDI encourages divers to find their balance and "trim" early on, making you a more graceful diver from the start.
3. Days 2 & 3: Into the Port Phillip Bay (Open Water Dives)
This is what you signed up for! You’ll head out to the Mornington Peninsula for four checkout dives.
-
The Sites: We often visit beginner-friendly spots like Rye Pier or Blairgowrie Pier. These sites are shallow, calm, and packed with marine life.
-
The Conditions: Yes, Melbourne water is "temperate" (averaging 14°C–20°C). But don't worry—we provide thick 7mm wetsuits to keep you cozy.
-
The Graduation: After successfully demonstrating your skills, you’ll be a certified SDI Open Water Diver, qualified to dive to 18 meters anywhere in the world!
4. Frequently Asked Questions
-
Do I need to own gear? No! We provide all the "big stuff" (BCD, Regs, Wetsuit, Tank). You only need to bring your own "personal" kit: mask, snorkel and boots for the best fit and hygiene.
-
What if I’m not a great swimmer? You don’t need to be a pro, but for safety, you’ll need to complete a 200m swim and a 10-minute float.
-
Why choose Simple Dive? We keep our ratios small. Our instructors aren't just teachers; they are TDI technical divers who bring a higher level of expertise to your very first day.
